Jim has considerable code and technical expertise developed over more than 25 years work in the private and public sectors. His architecture and construction experience encompasses residential, commercial, industrial, educational and civic projects. Jim has worked with a range of construction types, from Type V (wood) to Type I (concrete and steel).He is knowledgeable about regulatory requirements, including the Uniform Building Code, Americans with Disabilities Act and fire and life safety regulations. His general architectural background includes project management, building detailing, specifications, and construction administration.
Jim has experience as a construction manager, permit facilitator, plans examiner, and International Council of Building Officials [ICBO]-certified combination building inspector, performing code compliance inspections of general construction as well as plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems. Jim's public sector experience includes service as city architect for the city of Alameda and chief building official for the city of Piedmont, California.
Jim has served as an expert witness and testified on issues of contract compliance, design errors and omissions, construction administration, project delays, and construction defects.
His was also the senior project manager for TSAO Design Group, for whom he managed the $45 million relocation and build-out of the new corporate headquarters for the ChevronTexaco executives in San Ramon. Jim also served as executive architect on the Emporium/Bloomingdale's historic renovation, managing the project from inception through permit approval. This mixed-use development on San Francisco's Market Street will include retail, offices, theatres, restaurants and a hotel totaling 1.6 million square feet.
Jim holds a bachelor of architecture degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He is licensed in California and is a professional member of American Institute of Architects, the Construction Specifications Institute and the International Conference of Building Officials.
